Language courses, networking and culture – First summer school of the Competence Network Interdisciplinary Ukrainian Studies (KIU) at the European University Viadrina

20 students from Europe, Asia and Africa will come together at the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) from Monday, September 16 for the first summer school of the Competence Network Interdisciplinary Ukrainian Studies Frankfurt (Oder) – Berlin (KIU). The core of the two-week program consists of Ukrainian language courses at different levels as well as seminars on topics such as cultural diplomacy, the role of music in Ukrainian resilience, the history of the Donbas and cultural heritage in times of war and crisis. Selected program items of the KIU Summer School are also open to interested visitors from the region.

Waste rate is over 60 percent – EMO contributes to waste prevention

The MOL giveaway market initiated by the Märkisch-Oderland waste disposal company in March of this year has been a complete success. This is shown by an initial evaluation of the items offered on the www.verschenkemarkt-mol.de platform. A total of 931 items to be given away were advertised by residents of the district on Verschenkemarkt MOL in the period from March 17 to August 23, 2024. Of these, 573 actually found a new owner.

Oder-Spree district celebrates first public naturalization ceremony

The new Citizenship Act came into force in June 2024. It stipulates that the naturalization certificate should be presented in a festive setting at a public naturalization ceremony. The Oder-Spree district hosted this event for the first time on Monday, September 9, 2024. District Administrator Frank Steffen, Katja Kaiser, Head of the Department for Youth, Social Affairs and Culture, and Ariane Haupt, Head of the Office for Foreigners' Affairs and Integration, welcomed the new citizens.

Nationwide warning day on 12.09.2024

Every year on the second Thursday in September, the nationwide warning day takes place – a joint day of action by the federal, state and local authorities. It is intended to test the warning systems and provide the public with knowledge on the subject of warnings. Experience shows that people can react better in an emergency if they are familiar with the warning procedures. A test warning in the form of a warning text will be sent to all warning multipliers (e.g. radio stations and app servers) connected to the Modular Warning System (MoWaS for short) of the federal government from 11:00 a.m. on 12.09.2024.

ALFA-Mobil comes to Frankfurt (Oder)

Reading the newspaper, writing messages to nursery or school, sending emails – many people find these things difficult. Almost one in eight people in Frankfurt (Oder) has difficulty reading and writing. On Friday, September 13, 2024, the ALFA-Mobil will be on Platz der Republik in front of Kaufland from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. to raise awareness of the issue. In Frankfurt, the basic education center of the adult education center helps adults to improve their reading and writing skills.

From September 16 to 22, 2024, 13 organic bakeries in Berlin and Brandenburg are inviting visitors to take a look over their shoulders as they practise their craft. In the Oderland-Spree region, those interested can take a look at the production at Hofbäckerei Marienhöhe by registering in advance. From "Baking in the open air" to tours of mills and bakeries, cookie, croissant and gluten-free baking courses to "Baking with kids", the program at the participating bakeries is diverse.

Start training and studying at the city administration

On Monday, September 2, 2024, Lord Mayor René Wilke welcomed 17 young men and women who will begin their training or dual studies at the city administration of Frankfurt (Oder) with immediate effect or from October. The trainees and students will complete the practical part of their training or studies in the specialist offices of the municipal administration or in the rescue station and at Frankfurt (Oder) Hospital.
