On Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the short film "TRANSIT Frankfurt (Oder)" will be shown at the Viadrina Municipal Museum on Brandenburg Short Film Day, with the Polish language version at 3 p.m. and the German language version at 4.30 p.m.
The documentary focuses on the end of the Second World War and the subsequent new beginning and recalls the fate of the city and the returnees. At least 1.5 million German camp returnees were released from Soviet camps in Frankfurt (Oder) or transferred to other prisons and camps. Between 1945 and 1956, Frankfurt/Słubice also became a hub for various paths of fate.
In the 40-minute film by Grimme Prize winner Loretta Walz, Knut Gerwers and Karl-Konrad Tschäpe, numerous displaced persons, politically persecuted people, war returnees and Polish Siberian deportees have their say. After the screening, there will be an opportunity for a discussion with Dr. Karl-Konrad Tschäpe.
The film project was made financially possible by support from the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship.
