IHK Ostbrandenburg as owner of the collective brand "Eberswalder Würstchen" insists on Brandenburg regionality
The Eberswalder sausage factories at the traditional Britz site are to be closed. Against this backdrop, the IHK Ostbrandenburg supports all efforts by the Brandenburg state government to preserve the site.
"As we have learned from the press, there are now plans to manufacture products under the 'Eberswalder' brand at other locations," says Monique Zweig, Managing Director of the IHK Ostbrandenburg. "In this context, we would like to point out that the IHK Ostbrandenburg is the owner of the collective brand 'Eberswalder Würstchen' and that this brand is linked to production in the Eberswalde area."
The individual brand "Eberswalder" used by EWN Wurstspezialitäten GmbH & Co. KG cannot be used separately from the collective mark "Eberswalder Würstchen" at other production locations, according to the IHK Ostbrandenburg. If production is relocated from the Eberswalde area, a difference in trademark law therefore comes to light.
"The loss of regional added value and jobs as a result of the closure of the Britz site will hit the region hard," says Monique Zweig. "What's more, Eberswalde sausages are a characteristic, local Brandenburg product. We want to help preserve this important traditional regional product and find a viable solution in the interests of the regional economy."
As the brand owner, the IHK Ostbrandenburg will support all efforts to ensure that 'Eberswalder Würstchen' can continue to be produced in the region around Eberswalde.
The "Eberswalder Würstchen" brand has existed since 1987 and protects regional production and tradition. The IHK Ostbrandenburg has been the owner of this collective brand since 1995. It was secured by the IHK to prevent the threat of production moving away at the time.
"A collective mark can be used by anyone who adheres to the rules of the mark. Similar to the well-known 'Original Dresdner Christstollen' label, the geographical origin is also decisive," explains Stefan Heiden, a lawyer at IHK Ostbrandenburg.
This means that other meat processors who adhere to the trademark rules are also allowed to use the collective trademark "Eberswalder Würstchen" as long as they produce in the Eberswalde area and meet certain quality characteristics.
The IHK Ostbrandenburg is the largest representative body for the economy between Schwedt and Eisenhüttenstadt, between Berlin and the Oder river.
