Historical scenes from the life of the preacher Thomas Müntzer © Anastasiia Kalko

On July 13 and 14, 2024, the HanseStadtFest "Bunter Hering" on the Holzmarkt will be enriched by historical play scenes that shed light on the life of the preacher Thomas Müntzer. Thomas Müntzer, born around 1489 in Stolberg am Harz, was a leading preacher in the Peasants' War of 1524/1525 and an important representative of the Renaissance and Reformation.

The scenic depictions begin in 1512, when Müntzer was studying at the university in Frankfurt (Oder) and already recognized the social injustices against which he later fought. Another scene shows the dramatic battle near Frankenhausen in May 1525, in which Müntzer called on the peasants to fight against the authorities under the rainbow flag, but failed and was taken prisoner. The final scene depicts his torture and execution on May 27, 1525 at Heldrungen Fortress, where Müntzer did not recant his convictions despite torture and was finally executed.

These historical scenes offer guests of the HanseStadtFest an impressive journey into the past and shed light on the eventful life of Thomas Müntzer.

The scenes are performed by the Frey Faehnleyn der Hansestadt zu Frankenforde a. dni. 1495 e.V., under the direction of the mastermind and playwright Thomas Wahl and other committed members.
