President of the East Brandenburg Chamber of Industry and Commerce on the future of the Oder
"To reduce CO2 emissions in the transport sector, the EU and the German government want to strengthen inland navigation. This goal is also shared by the regional economy," says Carsten Christ, president of the East Brandenburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry. "Our federal state has many rivers and canals that are very well suited for shipping. They offer connections to Poland and the Czech Republic as well as to the Western European waterway network. As a transport route, the Oder can make a valuable contribution to climate protection. It is an option for shifting more traffic off the road. A single, small inland waterway vessel replaces around 50 truck trips, consumes little energy and has low emissions. These are the benchmarks for our decisions on the future of the Oder."
That is why the restoration of the defective groynes along the Oder in accordance with the German-Polish agreement to strengthen the border river is imperative. Only this will ensure long-term flood protection and improve the usability for freight and recreational navigation.
