Modernization Blockades in the Economy and Science of the GDR

The exhibition "Mod-Block-DDR. Modernization Blockades in the Economy and Science of the GDR" can be seen until the end of August 2025 in the Viadrina main building, in front of the library. Seven years of research in collaboration with numerous partners have gone into the "Mod-Block-DDR" research project at the Viadrina Center of Polish and Ukrainian Studies. The illustrator Peter M. Hoffmann has used vivid drawings to capture what the researchers have discovered about modernization blockades in the economy and science of the GDR and in Poland.

Where does this East Germany actually lie?

In their paintings, sculptures and texts, Oliver Barth and Anja Beecken explore the current challenges and prejudices against East Germany by also reflecting on personal experiences from the post-reunification period. East Germany is not just a place. It is an essential part of our country that contributes to our collective heritage with its unique history and culture. A space for dialog is created - free of accusations, free of guilt. The exhibition is organized by the Oekumenisches Europa-Centrum Frankfurt (Oder) e. V. and the cultural coordinator of the European University Viadrina, Constance Krüger. The exhibition can be seen until August 2

Some Were Neighbors: Perpetration, Followership and Resistance

The exhibition "Some Were Neighbors" will be on display at the Viadrina Municipal Museum until the end of the year. At its center is the question: How was the Holocaust possible? In National Socialist Germany and in a Europe dominated by Germany, forms of cooperation and complicity developed everywhere, in government and society, wherever the victims of persecution and mass murder lived. "Some Were Neighbors" examines the role of ordinary people in the Holocaust and the multitude of motives and tensions that influenced individual courses of action. The exhibition also features individuals who did not give in to the opportunities and temptations to betray their fellow human beings, reminding us that even in extraordinary times, there are alternatives to collaboration and perpetration; an exhibition by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington in cooperation with the Museum Viadrina, the Pewobe gGmbH, the City of Frankfurt (Oder) and the European University Viadrina. The exhibition languages are German and Polish. Admission is free.
Location: Viadrina Municipal Museum, Carl-Philipp-Emanuel-Bach-Straße 11, 15230 Frankfurt (Oder)
