Richard Strauss' best-known opera "Der Rosenkavalier" is all about love, instincts and intrigue. An ageing noblewoman, a young man, an even younger woman and a lecherous baron provide material for great emotions and plenty of confusion. The guest performance by Staatstheater Cottbus can be seen at the Kleist Forum in Frankfurt on March 15 and 17.

The Marschallin awakens rudely next to her young lover Octavian when Baron Ochs von Lerchenau bursts in. He is looking for a suitor and is hoping for support from his relative. The Marschallin proposes Octavian as Rosenkavalier and best man, thus sealing the end of their affair. When Octavian meets the young bride Sophie, the two fall in love. Now it's time to get rid of the disagreeable groom Ochs, who blusteringly falls into the trap set for him in the best comedy style with disguises, fake ex-wives and all kinds of theatrical magic.

An opera between melancholy and satire, but also a hymn to strong women and changing role models in a declining era.
