Intact ecosystems are important habitats. These include forests, soils or near-natural green spaces in the city and in the countryside. They store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, serve as protection during floods or provide cooling in hot weather.
The "Natural Climate Protection" Action Program (ANK) launched by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) serves to strengthen and restore ecosystems. The federal government currently has four billion euros available until 2026.
Trees for FFO – Natural Climate Protection in Frankfurt (Oder)
The city of Frankfurt (Oder) will receive funding of 545,040 euros over five years from 2025 for two projects: "Tree Preservation and Revitalization" and "Ecological Landscape Enhancement".
After the application was submitted in October 2023 and the project outlines were approved by the project sponsor in April 2024, the city of Frankfurt (Oder) has now received the grant notification.
The first project involves measures to improve tree locations and tree grates for individual trees (young and old trees). The inner-city and impaired sites are to be upgraded in the long term through measures to improve the nutrient and water balance. In this way, the growing trees affected are to fully develop their potential to adapt to changing conditions in urban areas and develop greater vitality.
The second project will create a stable landscape area in the Nuhnen district. Areas in the vicinity of larger wooded areas will be supplemented by biotope types rich in biomass. The expansion of biodiversity and increasing the storage capacity of CO2 in the biomass are key objectives.
To this end, wooded areas and groups of trees will be established to provide habitats for numerous animal and plant species. Existing insular biotope structures such as abandoned fruit tree stands or site-specific small-scale wetland biotopes are included in the targeted structure.
