From mid-September, the environmental education project “WasserPaten” will begin with a varied programme of talks and excursions on the topics of water conservation, hydrology and ecology in the state of Brandenburg. The programme is a joint initiative of the adult education centres in Frankfurt (Oder), Brandenburg an der Havel, Potsdam-Mittelmark, Uckermark and Spree-Neiße, as well as NABU Brandenburg.
The five-part lecture series begins on Wednesday 23 September 2026 and provides basic knowledge on the water cycle, drinking water supply, the legal framework, renaturation and flood protection, the use of digital information portals, and the consequences of lignite mining in Lusatia. The lectures can be attended either in person at the VHS Frankfurt (Oder) or online via livestream.
The series is complemented by field trips, during which participants can deepen their theoretical knowledge on site. The excursions begin on Saturday, 12 September 2026, with a cycle tour to the dykes along the Reitwein Oder near Frankfurt (Oder). Further excursions will take participants, for example, to water treatment and sewage treatment works, special biotopes such as the Belzig landscape meadows, and Lake Pinnow near Guben.
All events are aimed at people interested in nature and the environment, and at volunteers involved in nature and water conservation. Participation is free of charge, although separate registration is required for individual excursions.
