The Volkshochschule Frankfurt (Oder) (VHS) started the spring semester 2025 in February, offering a wide range of educational and social activities in the areas of languages, health, culture, society, computers and work. There is also an extensive range of family education courses at the Eltern-Kind-Zentrum Nord. Adults can improve their reading, writing and arithmetic skills in the learning cafés of the adult education center's basic education center.

In the VHS language program there is the opportunity to learn Polish, French and Spanish from the start in the new semester. English courses are available at level A1 for beginners up to C1 conversation. Norwegian and Italian courses can also be booked by those with previous knowledge.

In the program area Culture and Design, the VHS invites you to get creative, for example in the course "Drawing for everyone. Learn techniques". At the end of March, a guitar course for beginners will also begin, in which the basics of the "Spanish guitar" can be learned. In the course "Mandala - creative deceleration", participants learn how to design mandalas themselves. This will also take place in March.

In the area of Computer and Career, the VHS traditionally offers introductory courses, including Windows 11, Office for beginners and those new to Office and spreadsheets with Excel. The basic course "First steps with the smartphone" offers an introduction to the simple and safe operation of a smartphone or tablet PC with an Android operating system.

In the program area Society and Local History, the exhibition "What was today and what used to be" begins in March in cooperation with the Deutsche Angestellten Akademie (DAA). This revolves around lost places in Frankfurt (Oder) and a journey through time to today.

Another exhibition can be seen on Friday, February 28. The digital exhibition "Rarely alone" shows self-portraits that people with rare diseases have painted, drawn or photographed in recent years and months. In this way, those affected draw attention to the World Day of Rare Diseases and their personal fate. Admission to the exhibitions is free.

In addition to the exhibitions, the VHS invites you to various events and workshops. In preparation for this year's voting phase for the citizens' budget, two practical workshops "Citizens' budget made easy!" will take place at the adult education center in June. In the course, interested Frankfurters can familiarize themselves with the basic idea of the citizens' budget and take away tips on how to submit an application. Participants will also have the opportunity to discuss their own project ideas.

Three lectures in the new semester will allow you to travel to faraway places and learn about other countries: at the beginning of March, the multimedia lecture "Poland - The North" will take you to the Polish Baltic coast and the Great Masurian Lakes region. A week later, it's off on "A journey through Kenya". In April, a multimedia show will take us to "Greenland".

This semester, there will once again be a course for budding beekeepers. Participants will learn how to handle bees and how to harvest and process honey properly and professionally.

New mission statement for VHS Frankfurt (Oder)

The Volkshochschule Frankfurt (Oder) has had a new mission statement since the beginning of the month. In a participatory process, the previous mission statement was put to the test and its successor version was developed. The mission statement renewal took place as part of quality management. Both the lecturers at the VHS and the citizens of Frankfurt were involved in the development process.

The new mission statement is published on the VHS website. It is also available there in plain language.
