What future do cities have in the state of Brandenburg? Especially against the background of changing conditions for urban development due to climate change, digital transformation or the need to strengthen social cohesion and the common good?

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Planning of the State of Brandenburg (MIL) is already supporting selected municipal model projects in a second round, which receive earmarked funds of a maximum of 100,000 euros as a grant for commissioned third parties and material costs to find approaches to solutions for the challenges of the future in a discussion process.

With the state initiative "My City of the Future", the MIL wants to motivate all cities to think ahead, prepare and enrich a discussion about the future.

The city of Frankfurt (Oder) took advantage of this opportunity to advance the topic of "urban renewal on Slubicer Strasse" with new impulses for urban development by submitting a project outline. With the approach "Collaborative development of a center for sustainable business in the quarter Slubicer Straße" the external expert jury under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Silke Weidner (BTU - Cottbus-Senftenberg) could be convinced.

In a process lasting two years, solutions for the site and urban development issues will now be developed in successive work phases from 2024 to 2026, with the aim of working out a concrete road map for revitalization with the owners of the properties as well as with the citizens, urban designers, urban planners and local companies - in some cases in experimental ways.

In the context of the state initiative, a total of seven municipalities were able to convince with particular innovative content, the quality of the integrated approach, the conclusiveness of the spatial focus, the participatory approach, as well as the implementation orientation.

The state initiative allows that within the processing process also new paths could be taken, whereby mistakes should also be part of the knowledge, said the Minister for Infrastructure and State Planning of the State of Brandenburg Guido Beermann on September 27, 2023 in Potsdam at a ceremony to hand over the certificates to the winning cities in the presence of those responsible in each case.
