"Tosca" - Puccini's opera thriller about seduction, slander and the role of art in totalitarian regimes can be seen on May 3 and 5 as a guest performance by Staatstheater Cottbus at Frankfurt's Kleist Forum. Director Armin Petras sets the story in the 1990s and stages this milestone in opera history as a political thriller about the relationship between art and power.
The diva Floria Tosca, adored by all, who only wanted to live for art and love, gets caught up in the power struggles of a corrupt political system after her lover falls into the hands of police chief Scarpia because he has given protection to a politically persecuted man. Scarpia combines his political power interests with an obsession for Tosca and spins a deadly intrigue.
Puccini has composed an atmosphere that is tense to the breaking point and proves himself to be a master of great emotions that leap from the stage action to the audience.
