This peak season, there will once again be special public tours of St Mary's Church in Frankfurt (Oder). It starts on Wednesday, 6 May at 4.00 pm with the guided tour "Foray through the underworld – a guided tour to burial sites and through the cellar vaults of St Mary's Church". Further themed tours, e.g. to the choir windows, will follow until October.
As recently as 250 years ago, the interior of St Mary's was a popular burial place for civic figures and middle-class families. Tombstones, memorial pictures and burial vaults characterised the image of Frankfurt's main church. Today, this part of the church's history is only recognisable at second glance.
This tour gives visitors an insight into two cellar vaults, the Greiffenpfeil burial vault and the restored Baroque burial vault in the south aisle. You will also learn interesting facts about the former burial culture in Frankfurt's St Mary's Church. The focus is also on the changes in the culture of remembrance after the Reformation and the gravestones that can still be found in the church today.
The number of participants is limited to 15 people. The tour only takes place with a minimum of five participants and is not suitable for people with limited mobility or children under the age of 14.
The offer is organised by the Kulturbüro Frankfurt (Oder). It is led by historian Henriette Brendler.
