With "The Legend of Paul and Paula", the Frankfurt Kleist Forum is presenting one of the most beautiful love stories of the GDR in a theater version by the Uckermärkische Bühnen Schwedt on 15 and 16 February. Set against a backdrop that brings the GDR of the 1970s to life and with plenty of live East German rock hits, including those by the Puhdys, Silly, City, Gundermann and Veronika Fischer, the play tells of the struggle for individual happiness against state-imposed collectivity.
According to legend, Paul and Paula were meant to be together. Everyone in Singerstrasse knows this. The only problem is that although Paul and Paula live in the same street, they don't know each other. Paula is a single mother and a worker. Paul works as an employee and is unhappily married. When they get closer after a party, their happiness could hardly be greater: Paula is on cloud nine and ready to break with convention. Paul, on the other hand, remains reserved for the time being. He doesn't want to give up his marriage. Only when Paula loses one of her children does Paul begin to fight for her love...
A gripping and poetic story about love, freedom, self-determination and the power of dreams.
