The "Bunter Hering" becomes greener

Sustainability is capitalized at this year's HanseStadtFest "Bunter Hering", which will take place from 7 to 9 July 2023 in Frankfurt (Oder). Essential pillars are a traffic concept that relies on a free public transport in the city center, beverage cups made of bio-plastic and electricity exclusively from renewable energy sources.

The event manager responsible for the organization of the city festival Robert Reuter emphasizes: "Step by step we go on the way to make the HanseStadtFest more sustainable. The "Bunter Hering" will be greener."

In cooperation and with the support of the Frankfurt brewery, beverage cups made of bio-plastic are used on the festival grounds, which are biodegradable and even compostable. The main raw material for this is starch-based polylactic acid (PLA), which is produced from plants. Conventional disposable cups, which are based on petroleum, are not only harmful to the environment during production, but also during disposal. This is because polymers are incinerated for disposal, which releases toxic gases into the atmosphere. Even with a disposal in the residual waste garbage can, the bio-plastic cups bring a CO2 saving of 81%, according to the manufacturer.

Sustainability is also at the forefront of the electricity requirements for the city festival. All facilities are supplied by Stadtwerke Frankfurt (Oder) at the green electricity rate based on renewable energy sources.

Guests arriving from the surrounding area are advised to park their vehicles outside the city center, especially in the parking lots set up for this purpose at Spitzkrug, Messegelände as well as in Birkenallee, and to use the free shuttle service provided by Stadtverkehrsgesellschaft mbH Frankfurt (Oder) on the festival weekend by bus and streetcar.

For visitors traveling by bicycle, bicycle parking areas will be set up on the university campus in Logenstraße and in front of the German-Polish Tourist Information Office for the duration of the city festival.
