Four days packed with meetings, cultural highlights and intensive promotion of business, education, culture and tourism. More than 80 towns from twelve European countries took part in this year’s Hanseatic Day. With a joint presentation, Frankfurt (Oder) and Słubice showcased themselves as a German-Polish twin city in the heart of Europe from 11 to 14 June at the 46th International Hanseatic Day in Stargard, Poland. The event offered ideal opportunities to strengthen existing contacts, forge new partnerships and jointly raise the profile of the cities of the Modern Hanseatic League.

Stargard’s historic old town formed the centrepiece of the Hanseatic Day. There, the member cities of the Modern Hanseatic League showcased themselves at the Hanseatic Market. Frankfurt (Oder) and Słubice provided information at a joint stand about their tourist, cultural and economic strengths and impressively demonstrated what characterises the close cross-border cooperation between the two towns: openness, internationalism, commitment and a forward-looking approach. The delegation members struck up conversations with numerous visitors from all over Europe.

The delegation included, amongst others, Frankfurt’s Lord Mayor Dr Axel Strasser, the Mayor of Słubice Marzena Słodownik, the Hanseatic Ambassadors Agnieszka Pakulska and Uwe Henning, councillors from Słubice, and staff from both city councils. The artists from the groups “Familie Gerstenberg” and “Bohema” attracted particular attention.

Frankfurt (Oder) has been a member of the Modern Hanseatic League since 1993. Today, the network brings together around 180 towns from 16 European countries and continues the tradition of the medieval Hanseatic League. The aim of the alliance is to strengthen cultural, tourist and economic cooperation between its member towns and to actively promote European exchange.

Participation in the Hanseatic Day took place as part of the project “The Twin City and its Hanseatic Cultural Heritage / Dwumiasto – kultura i dziedzictwo Hanzy”, which is funded by the Small Projects Fund (KPF) “Culture & Tourism” of the Euroregion PRO EUROPA VIADRINA as part of the INTERREG VI A Brandenburg–Poland 2021–2027 cooperation programme, with funding from the European Regional Development Fund.
