Brandenburg's Minister of Science, Dr. Manja Schüle, presented economist Dr. Rick Steinert from the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) with the 11th State Teaching Award on Wednesday, 29 November. The economist received the award as one of three particularly committed university lecturers in the state. The theme of this year's state teaching award was "Open Educational Resources in Higher Education". Dr. Rick Steinert was able to impress with a course on machine learning with the programming language R.
"This recognition means backing and visibility for me," commented Dr. Rick Steinert on the 10,000 euro prize. The award-winning course he developed is based on reflective, experimental learning. In addition to customized videos and animations, the learning units available online consist of multiple-choice questions, interactive graphics and code boxes in which the programming language can be applied. "We transfer science directly into practice," is how he describes his concept.
About Rick Steinert: Rick Steinert came to the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) in 2009. He studied Business Administration and then completed a Master's degree in International Business Administration. During his bachelor's degree, he worked as a student assistant at the Chair of Finance and Capital Market Theory of Prof. Dr. Sven Husmann. He has been a research assistant there since 2012. For his doctoral thesis, he dealt with price formation on electricity markets. His main areas of interest include artificial intelligence, machine learning and finance.
