Under the theme ‘Oderland-Spree 2030+ – what can we achieve together?’, representatives from the districts of Oder-Spree and Märkisch-Oderland, the city of Frankfurt (Oder), as well as from local authorities and regional institutions, gathered on 17 April 2026 for the second meeting of the Oderland-Spree Steering Group. The venue was Neuzelle Abbey, which provided the setting for a joint discussion on current challenges and strategic issues relating to regional development.

The meeting focused on the further development of a shared understanding of key future issues for the region. During an introductory round, current challenges were identified – including, in particular, the development of commercial and industrial sites, securing and financing infrastructure, the expansion of public transport, and addressing growing pressure on land, for example due to renewable energy.

A key focus of the event was also the ‘OderlandSpree³’ Strategic Regional Development Concept, which is currently being drawn up. The aim of the concept is to consolidate existing regional strategies, identify key areas of potential and define long-term, jointly supported measures. This collaborative approach is intended to help balance out disparities within the region and, through coordinated action, create added value for all sub-regions.

Furthermore, the topic of mobility was discussed in depth during the event. The districts are currently working on updating their local transport plans and are aiming for greater coordination in order to create more efficient and better-integrated services. During the discussion, particular emphasis was placed on the importance of common standards and the need for closer inter-municipal cooperation in order to develop sustainable and cost-effective solutions for public transport.

Finally, the participants agreed to further develop the existing forums for exchange. In addition to the half-yearly meetings of the steering group and the joint annual kick-off, topic-specific forums under the title “Oderland-Spree KONKRET” to deepen technical dialogue whilst also raising the profile of regional issues.

The “Oderland-Spree Konkret” format offers the next opportunity for networking and professional exchange. The event will take place online and will focus on the topics of urban development contracts and data centres. The exact date of the event is yet to be announced. Interested representatives from local authorities are welcome to contact the regional management team for further information.
