From Easter to October

With a varied program, the Fontane Haus Schiffmühle starts the new season on April 9. Starting at 12 noon, visitors can look forward to fresh cakes and other delicacies from the wood-burning oven, among other things. Children can get active themselves for a small fee and bake yeast plaits. Musical entertainment will be provided from 2 p.m. by Wriezen singer-songwriter Denis B. Markheim, and the raised beds planted by schoolchildren will be on display for the first time. And, of course, there will be guided tours throughout the day of the house where Louis Henri Fontane, the father of the great poet Theodor, lived until his death in 1867. Today, the house is one of the few authentic Fontane places.

Since 2019, the 200th anniversary of Theodor Fontane's birth, there has been a completely redesigned, contemporary permanent exhibition here, reflecting the equally intimate and special relationship between father and son.

"Easter Sunday is the start of a season with many highlights," says Ben Schubert, who is responsible for the operation of the Fontane Haus at Bad Freienwalde Tourismus GmbH, "until September 30, for example, we have three action days for children. So on June 25, pizza is baked and batiks are made, on August 5, we build birdhouses and on September 30, kites are made." The Fontane Haus also offers events with lots of music on the two May holidays. On May 28 and Sept. 16, master bakers will present their products from the wood-burning oven, and on July 29, an interesting reading will focus on "Fontane's women."

"The Fontane Haus has long become a popular destination not only for culture lovers, but also and especially for cyclists and families," says tourism chief Ilka Krüger happily, "with its idyllic location between the gently flowing Old Oder and the steeply rising slopes of Neuenhagen Island, the house is an ideal place to stay." Among the children, the water play station, the rabbit enclosure and the small cottage garden are a particular source of enthusiasm. In the summer months, the large pavilion with wood-burning oven and barbecue invites guests to get together in a cozy atmosphere - perfect for excursions, class reunions and family outings.

The Fontane Haus is open from Fridays to Sundays and on public holidays from 12 to 18 o'clock and by appointment.
