Students of the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) invite you to a joint hike to Lebus on Saturday, January 25. This is the third time that such an excursion has taken place as part of the ViaPilgern format, which is open to students and employees of the Viadrina as well as all other interested parties from the region. After hikes to and from Neuzelle, the latest edition leads along the Way of St. James for eleven kilometers to Lebus.

The schedule:

  • 9.00 am: Welcome in front of the Audimax of the European University Viadrina
  • from 9.15 am: joint hike along the Oder, along the Way of St. James to the north
  • around 12.15 pm: arrival in medieval Lebus, information about the Way of St. James and the historic town
  • around 12.45 hrs: lunch together in Lebus
  • 14.40 hrs: return by bus from Lebus to the train station in Frankfurt (Oder) (approx. 20 minutes)

The idea for the joint hike originated in a seminar by Viadrina economist Prof. Dr. Georg Stadtmann. The group event in May 2024 was so well received that students were invited to a second edition in July - this time supported by the Viadrina Center of Polish and Ukrainian Studies (VCPU). The current, third hike is also organized by students and supported by the VCPU.

The route of the current excursion on the Way of St. James along the Oder is reminiscent of an initiative of the European University Viadrina from 2005, when Prof. Dr. Dr. Ulrich Knefelkamp (1951-2020) launched the project "Jakobswege östlich und westlich der Oder", in which he and students rediscovered, researched and popularized the course of the historical Way of St. James in the region over the years.
