The extensive reconstruction measures on the A12 federal freeway to optimize traffic flow in the area of the German-Polish border were successfully completed in December 2025. The new traffic routing was put into operation on the weekend before Christmas. The aim of the measure is to permanently reduce the massive congestion at the Frankfurt (Oder)-Autobahn border checkpoint and stabilize cross-border traffic.

The reason for the structural adjustments is the stationary border controls carried out by the Federal Police since autumn 2023. In the past, these regularly led to considerable backlogs, which put a strain on the regional economy and made everyday life in the twin city of Frankfurt (Oder)/Słubice more difficult.

During the conversion, parts of the central reservation were redesigned as crossings.
In the Berlin direction, this now enables a more efficient division:

  • separate lanes for trucks: enables orderly access to the control
  • separate control area: optimizes the processes of the Federal Police
  • additional lane for cars and buses: ensures faster passage through the checkpoint for individual and tourist traffic

The city administration of Frankfurt (Oder) and the municipality of Słubice had repeatedly and emphatically lobbied the responsible federal authorities over the past two years for a solution to the traffic problem.
