Every year on the second Thursday in September, the nationwide warning day takes place – a joint day of action by the federal, state and local authorities. It is intended to test the warning systems and provide the public with knowledge on the subject of warnings. Experience shows that people can react better in an emergency if they are familiar with the warning procedures.

On 12.09.2024, a trial warning in the form of a warning text will be sent to all warning multipliers (e.g. radio stations and app servers) connected to the Modular Warning System (MoWaS for short) of the federal government from 11:00 a.m. The warning multipliers send the trial warning with a time delay to warning devices such as televisions, radios and smartphones. You can then read and/or hear the warning there.

Parallel to this, municipal warning devices (e.g. loudspeaker vans or sirens) can be triggered at state level, in the participating districts and municipalities.

At around 11:45 a.m., an all-clear is issued via the warning devices and end devices that were previously used to send the warning. No all-clear is currently being sent via cell broadcast. The possibility of also issuing an all-clear via this warning channel is currently being examined by the mobile network operators, among others.

The Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance is conducting a survey following the nationwide warning day in order to gain feedback on experiences and perceptions.
