On Thursday, 21 May, from 5.00 to 6.30 p.m., political scientist and historian Dr Hans-Rainer Sandvoß will give a lecture on the Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold at the Volkshochschule Frankfurt (Oder) (room 1.07, building 1) to commemorate the efforts of those people who fought to preserve the first German democracy between 1924 and 1933.
In his lecture, Sandvoß describes the successes and challenges of the political defence association Reichsbanner and thus contradicts the widespread prejudice that the Weimar Republic was "a republic without republicans".
An authentic picture of the political and social conflicts of the time emerges on the basis of historical reports, eyewitness memories, court documents and newspaper sources. Among the topics addressed are the contrasts between town and country, large-scale agrarian interests and the plight of agricultural workers as well as the struggle of democratic forces against the terror of militant opponents of the Republic.
Dr. Hans-Rainer Sandvoß was a long-time employee and deputy director of the German Resistance Memorial Centre and published numerous works on resistance to the Nazi regime in Berlin and Brandenburg.
This is an event organised by the Frankfurt (Oder) Adult Education Centre in cooperation with the "Victims of Political Tyranny" Memorial and Documentation Centre as part of the Month of Political Education
