During the holiday season, the vetting and registration processes for apprenticeship contracts are in full swing at Brandenburg’s three Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHK).
“So far, the picture appears stable compared with last year. Numerous contracts are currently still being registered across the three chambers in Cottbus, East Brandenburg and Potsdam. As at 30 June, a total of 3,032 vocational training contracts had been registered. The figure is rising daily. Nevertheless, it is still worth looking for a suitable apprenticeship place. Many companies are desperately seeking new recruits. There is bound to be something suitable for every young person leaving school now. “We at the Chambers of Industry and Commerce support young people and companies in all matters relating to apprenticeships and securing a skilled workforce” , says Ina Hänsel, President of the Potsdam Chamber of Industry and Commerce, speaking on behalf of the Brandenburg Chambers of Industry and Commerce’s State Working Group.
Significant increases have been recorded particularly in the sectors of office management, retail and sales, the hotel and catering industry, and in the role of process mechanic for construction, stone and earthworks. Looking at the regions, the districts of Spree-Neiße (+21 per cent), Barnim (+30 per cent) and Havelland (+13.5 per cent) in particular are currently recording a significant increase in contracts compared with the same period last year.
An overview of apprenticeship opportunities
The Brandenburg apprenticeship market still offers school leavers a wide range of apprenticeship opportunities to get their careers off to a good start. Over 5,100 apprenticeship places at member companies are still listed in the IHK Apprenticeship Atlas at www.mach-es-in-brandenburg.de and can be filtered by region, town, sector and occupation.
Advice services during the holidays
The careers advisers at Brandenburg’s Chambers of Industry and Commerce (IHKs) offer individual advice online and in person during the holidays, as well as other career guidance formats. This allows application documents to be checked, photos to be taken, suitable companies to be identified and enquiries to be channelled effectively.
Secure an internship
One’s personal environment – shaped by parents, friends, relatives and acquaintances (51 per cent) – and practical experience (70 per cent) remain the most important tools for career guidance. As a result, work placements, holiday jobs and company visits played an important role for more than a quarter of apprentices, as they offer a great opportunity to get a taste of the world of work and regional businesses. All Brandenburg-based training companies listed in the IHK Training Atlas can also be approached regarding an internship or a holiday job. This allows companies in Western Brandenburg to raise their profile free of charge, get to know talented young people at an early stage and recruit them. In the Potsdam Chamber district, young people aged 15 and over can also use work experience weeks during the holidays to explore various companies and careers through one-day work experience placements.
