The European Commission has officially proclaimed the year 2023 as the "European Year of Skills", with the aim of promoting competitiveness, participation and talent through retraining, digitization, continuing education and lifelong learning. Children and young people are also considered here to be best prepared for adult and professional life in the global world.

This is why the Frankfurt-Słubice Cooperation Center is organizing a two-day event on "Democracy in the European Union" for German and Polish schoolchildren aged 16 and 17 as part of Europe Day 2023 with the Euroregion Pro Europa Viadrina:

  • On Monday, May 15, 2023, students from Frankfurt (Oder), Słubice, Beeskow, Berlin, Seelow and Gorzów will participate in intercultural workshop and rhetoric seminars to enhance their presentation and communication skills.
  • At the student debate on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, participants will discuss democracy in the EU with a content focus on youth participation, the rule of law, fundamental rights and elections, as well as develop concrete demands to the EU. They will reflect on the democratic processes in the EU, also in relation to the European elections in 2024. Subsequently, a final declaration with agreed demands will be created, which will be handed over to the MEPs of the regions of Brandenburg and Lubuskie and West Pomerania.

On May 16 from 15.00 all interested parties are invited to the Collegium Polonicum in Słubice for the final discussion and Q&A session with experts from the EU and academia.

The event is organized by the City of Frankfurt (Oder) - Frankfurt-Słubice Cooperation Center, the Euroregion Pro Europe Viadrina, the EDIC Zielona Góra and the EDIC Frankfurt (Oder).

The event is supported by the Small Projects Fund of the Euroregion Pro Europa Viadrina with funds from the European Regional Development Fund within the framework of the INTERREG V A Brandenburg - Poland 2014-2020 cooperation program, as well as by the German-Polish Youth Office.
