35 years ago - on 17 June 1991 - the foundation stone for trusting cooperation between Germany and Poland was laid with the signing of the German-Polish Neighbourhood Treaty after the end of the Cold War. To mark this anniversary, the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation are hosting a public discussion event on Thursday, 28 May 2026 at 4.30 pm entitled "Cooperation in times of crisis: How much geopolitics is there in German-Polish relations?"
The evening will focus on the question of how the relationship between Germany and Poland is changing against the backdrop of global power shifts. Today, both countries are regarded as central pillars of the European security order and at the same time as bridge builders in a region that is increasingly at the centre of economic and social conflicts.
Together with the invited guests, we will discuss what expectations and opportunities arise from current geopolitical developments and what role Germany and Poland can play in Europe's stability and ability to act.
