Further steps in the process of cross-border urban development

A few days ago, about 40 representatives of the city administrations and city councils from Frankfurt (Oder) and Słubice as well as the Brandenburg Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Planning, the Joint Planning Office Berlin-Brandenburg and the Marshal's Office of the Lubuskie Voivodeship met in the Collegium Polonicum in Słubice for a workshop on cross-border urban development in the twin city.

The Słubice Mayor Mariusz Olejniczak and the Frankfurt Mayor René Wilke presented the development of the twin city in recent years.

René Wilke also pointed out the consequences of the negative decision on the location of the Future Center for the twin city: "Nevertheless, we want to use the attention that we have won in the competition for our projects. There is a vision for the double city and we are working to realize it step by step."

This vision includes, in particular, a traffic-calmed city center, a good network of bike paths connected across borders, joint management of green spaces and the conviction that for the area on Slubice Street, immediately adjacent to the city bridge, we should continue to strive for outstanding architecture with a European character.

In their presentations, the representatives of the regional and voivodeship levels presented the background for joint cross-border urban development in the twin city from regional, national and European perspectives.

During the panel discussion that followed, Mariusz Olejniczak called for more support from higher levels and impartiality in the allocation of funds.

The event was complemented by workshops on climate-friendly mobility and transport development as well as cross-border inner city space.

The results of the workshops will be incorporated into funding applications for the INTERREG program as well as the national ERDF programs this year and presented to the political bodies.

The event was moderated by Dr. Maciej Zathey (Institute for Territorial Development, Natural Sciences University of Wrocław) and Sven Friedrich (Büro "Infrastruktur & Umwelt" Potsdam) and funded by the MORO program of the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Construction.
