"Arsenic and Lace Hoods", a masterpiece of black humor, can be seen at Frankfurt's Kleist Forum on 25 and 26 May. The guest performance by the Hans Otto Theater from Potsdam exposes the banality of evil hidden behind petty-bourgeois normality and bourgeoisie.
The two charming old ladies Abby and Martha Brewster like to entertain guests in their own home, preferably lonely elderly gentlemen. Their specialty: delicious elderberry wine – with a tasty hint of arsenic and cyanide. Their insane nephew, who thinks he is the President of the USA, takes care of disposing of the bodies in the cellar. When her other nephew, the smart theater critic Mortimer, accidentally comes across the murder victims, he is stunned – and at the same time wants to make sure that his beloved aunts don't end up in prison. Not an easy task, especially as police officers are constantly dropping in for a visit. To make matters worse, the third nephew in the bunch turns up: Jonathan – a wanted mass murderer with plenty of experience in the field of plastic surgery.
"Arsenic and Lace" premiered on Broadway in 1941 and was a hit with audiences. The film adaptation with Cary Grant achieved cult status.
