The Bürgerbühne at the Kleist Forum is celebrating the first premiere of the 2024/2025 season on 21 November. "#Baseballschlägerjahre" uses an autofictional family story to examine how the enormous transformation processes of the fall of the Berlin Wall in the 1990s lead to an outbreak of right-wing violence and continue to have an impact today.
While parents try to cope with the chaos of the post-reunification years, the young children grow up into an uncertain, all-German future. Disorientation, self-discovery and the search for identity lead to radicalization. A shaven head suddenly appears in front of the bathroom mirror. The bomber jacket hangs over the combat boots in the wardrobe. Next to the cuddly rock LP are now the Onkelz – and in the room next door sits the tick. It is tolerated. Because they're brothers, aren't they?"
"We made a conscious decision to show the conflict and violence in private. The focus is not on street fighting, but on the division within a family," says director and Bürgerbühnen manager Hannes Langer. It is based on a personal story that has been enriched with fictional moments and follows the dramaturgy of post-teen novels such as "Oder Florida" (Christian Bangel), "Nullerjahre" (Hendrik Bolz) or "Mit der Faust in die Welt schlagen" (Lukas Rietzschel). However, "#Baseballschlägerjahre" doesn't get stuck in the 90s, but follows the strands of the post-reunification period right up to the present day. The protagonists meet again in a "waiting room of the future", ask what has happened since then and whether the baseball bat years will repeat themselves.
