What characterizes Ukrainian society; how can its diversity and resilience be explained? These are the questions addressed in the book "Freiheitsschauplatz. A Portrait of Ukrainian Society", which will be presented on Thursday, September 18, 6:30 p.m. at the Frankfurt (Oder) City and Regional Library, Bischofstraße 17.

Edited by Viadrina social scientist Dr. Susann Worschech, the book is the first German-language publication of a sociology of Ukraine. In it, German and Ukrainian experts explain Ukrainian society from a political, economic and social perspective and place a special focus on interaction and participation in Ukraine.

On the occasion of the book launch, editor Susann Worschech will be in conversation with economist and co-author Garry Poluschkin. While Susann Worschech wrote the chapter on Ukrainian civil society, Garry Poluschkin is the author of the chapter on the economic transformation of Ukraine since 1991. The discussion will be moderated by journalist Gesine Dornblüth.

Interested parties are cordially invited to the German-language book presentation. Admission is free.

About the book

"Theater of freedom – this term represents an antipode to the 'theater of war' that Ukraine has primarily been perceived as since February 2022," says Susann Worschech, explaining the title of her book. The academic coordinator of the Competence Network Interdisciplinary Ukrainian Studies Frankfurt (Oder) – Berlin (KIU) says about the aim of the publication: "In the best sense, it is intended to offer a portrait of Ukraine that reflects the social complexity, traces developments in a comprehensible way, addresses current problems and dynamics and at the same time offers an opportunity with each chapter to abstract from a subject-related analysis and to further develop theoretical concepts."

The book "Freiheitsschauplatz" is the first in the series "Interdisziplinäre Ukraine-Studien | Interdisciplinary Ukrainian Studies". Thanks to funding from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), it is available free of charge in an open access version.
