April 1, 2023 marked the start of the new funding period for the Basic Education Center in Frankfurt (Oder). This means that the work can be continued in a new dimension. The project is initially funded until the end of 2025 by the state of Brandenburg and from funds of the European Social Fund Plus with a total of 431,902.90 euros.

Since 2015, there is the basic education center of the Adult Education Center Frankfurt (Oder) (VHS) in the city, which has since dedicated itself to the task of providing low-literate citizens from 16 years of basic education skills such as reading, writing and arithmetic. This is done primarily in the open learning cafés, which take place in the rooms of the VHS in the city center as well as at other locations in the city for six to, in the future, up to twelve hours each week.

"Basic education is an important pillar of our work. We can assume that there are over 4,300 people here in Frankfurt (Oder) with difficulties in reading and writing. With the help of our offers, we can increase their chances of participating in society," says Elisabeth Lüdeking, head of the VHS.

The VHS is entering the new funding period stronger. With the help of the promotion it will be possible to equip the basic education center personnel better. In addition, there will be a new focus in terms of content. The focus of the work will be on outreach basic education in the social area.

Dr. Ina Pfitzner, project manager of the basic education center: "Since the topic is still very stigmatized, many of those affected do not yet find their way to our basic education offerings. That's why we want to bring basic education to them. We look for strong partners and take our low-threshold, open formats and consultations into the neighborhood and into the social space, to where the people are, where they like to be and where they know their way around."

In addition, the basic education center wants to raise awareness of the topic and contribute to destigmatization.

On today's Friday, 21 April 2023 takes place at 17.00 o'clock in the Brandenburg hall, Stendaler road 26 press-publicly the symbolic delivery of the Zuwendungsbescheids by the designated education minister of the country Brandenburg Steffen free mountain to the mayor of the city Frankfurt (Oder) René Wilke. Furthermore, Elisabeth Lüdeking and Dr. Ina Pfitzner will be on site.
