After its successful premiere last year, "#Baseballschlägerjahre" is back on the Frankfurt Kleist Forum's program in February and March. The Bürgerbühne production uses an autofictional family story to examine how the enormous transformation processes of the fall of the Berlin Wall in the 1990s led to an outbreak of right-wing violence that continues to have an impact today.
While the parents try to cope with the chaos of the post-reunification years, the adolescent children grow into an uncertain, all-German future. Disorientation, self-discovery and the search for identity lead to radicalization. A shaven head suddenly appears in front of the bathroom mirror. The bomber jacket hangs over the combat boots in the wardrobe. Next to the cuddly rock LP are now the Onkelz - and in the room next door is the tick. It is tolerated. Because they're brothers, aren't they?
"#Baseballschlägerjahre" is not about a street fight, but about the division in a family. It is based on a personal story that has been enriched with fictional moments and follows the dramaturgy of post-reunification novels such as "Oder Florida" (Christian Bangel), "Nullerjahre" (Hendrik Bolz) or "Mit der Faust in die Welt schlagen" (Lukas Rietzschel). However, "#Baseballschlägerjahre" doesn't get stuck in the 90s, but follows the strands of the post-reunification period right up to the present day. The protagonists meet again in a "waiting room of the future", ask what has happened since then and whether the baseball bat years will be repeated.
