How do human actions, social values, and cultural traditions shape artificial intelligence (AI) developments? And what constitutes democratic, culturally sensitive and human-centered AI? International researchers will discuss these and other questions on March 30 and 31, at the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder). Under the title "AI Technology as Interactional Human Culture: Language, Data Practice and Social Struggle", linguists Marie-Theres Fester-Seeger and Prof. Dr. Britta Schneider from the Chair of Language Use and Migration invite to an interdisciplinary exchange in a hybrid format. The face-to-face event will take place in the Logensaal of the European University in Frankfurt (Oder).

Fundamental questions about the nature of language and AI will be discussed from a critical anthropological, sociological, and linguistic perspective. "We consider AI culture as a human and interactive practice and examine it against the background of social structures and linguistic conditions. We want to pay attention to the people behind the systems and their social and linguistic embedding," Marie-Theres Fester-Seeger describes the approach of the conference.

Central contributions will come from Prof. Emily M. Bender (University of Washington), Prof. Dr. Joanna Rączaszek-Leonardi (University of Warsaw), Prof. Dr. Andreas Hepp (University of Bremen) and Dr. Nicolas Flores-Herr (Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS), among others. The conference will conclude with a roundtable discussion with all participants and interested parties on Friday, March 31, 2023, 5:00 p.m.
