Minister Schüle welcomes the future structure of the municipal financial equalisation scheme
Minister for Culture Dr Manja Schüle welcomes the future structure of the municipal financial equalisation scheme, on which the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of the Interior and Local Government, and the umbrella organisations reached agreement today in Potsdam. Among other things, it was decided to increase the allocation from the financial equalisation fund by 8 million euros to 30 million euros from 2027 onwards in order to preserve the theatre and orchestra landscape. The proposed changes to the municipal financial equalisation scheme still require approval by the state government and the state parliament.
Minister for Culture Dr Manja Schüle: “Culture is an indispensable part of our lives – indispensable as a space for open discourse and exchange, and indispensable as a place for people to meet and come together – in cities as well as in rural areas. At all times, but also – and especially – in times of crisis. I am therefore delighted that, following negotiations with the local authorities and districts, we have succeeded in increasing the flat-rate funding for theatres and orchestras by 8 million euros to 30 million euros from 2027 onwards under the Brandenburg Financial Equalisation Act. Our message is clear: culture is not just a ‘nice to have’, but a ‘must-have’. Every euro spent on our theatres, concert halls, orchestras and festivals is an excellent investment in the future of culture, in the culture of the future – and thus in our society, our democracy and our state!”
