Little is known about Leopold Ranke's years in Frankfurt (Oder), from 1818 to 1825. This applies to the scientific-historical appreciation of his first work "Geschichten der romanischen und germanischen Völker" (1824), which was written here, as well as to the cultural memory of the city of Frankfurt (Oder), in which Ranke is barely present today. "Apart from Heinrich von Kleist, no other personality in Frankfurt's city history is likely to have had such a global impact that has lasted over two hundred years to this day," says editor Prof. Dr. Reinhard Blänkner, Professor Emeritus of Modern History and Cultural History at the Viadrina.

With its broad view of Ranke's work as head teacher at Friedrichs-Gymnasium and his relationships in Frankfurt's urban society, the new publication offers a multifaceted panorama of the educational and academic history, social and economic history and cultural history of the city of Frankfurt (Oder) during Ranke's time. The book is aimed at specialists in Ranke research as well as anyone interested in Frankfurt's urban and regional history and beyond. The contributions are based on a symposium on Leopold Ranke, which took place in December 2024 at the European University Viadrina.
