The cultural and social scientist PD Dr Stefan Wellgraf will be a guest at the European University Viadrina on Tuesday, 9 June 2026 at 4.15 p.m. Shortly before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the public event will bring together the topics of football, right-wing extremism and East German history. As part of the seminar "How to deal with right-wing extremism", Wellgraf will present his book "Staatsfeinde. Right-wing subcultures in East Germany since the 1970s". In it, he uses the example of skinheads and hooligans from the BFC Dynamo neighbourhood to examine how right-wing subcultures developed in East Germany and how resentment against state elites became entrenched.
The event will take place in the Logenhaus, Logenstraße 11, room LH 101/102, and will be moderated by Viadrina political scientist Prof Dr Timm Beichelt. Following the book presentation, there will be an opportunity to talk to the author and discuss how to deal with right-wing extremism.
About the author: Stefan Wellgraf was born in East Berlin in 1979. He studied cultural and social sciences in Berlin, Frankfurt (Oder) and Paris. He then spent time at New York University, the Johann-Jacobs-Museum in Zurich and the University of Hamburg, among others. Since 2021, he has held a Heisenberg position at the Institute for European Ethnology at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. He also heads a BMBF project on transformations of right-wing violence in East Germany at the Institute for Social Sciences at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. His most recent book publications include "Rechtspopulismen der Gegenwart. Kulturwissenschaftliche Irritationen", edited with Christine Hentschel, and "Ausgrenzungsapparat Schule. How our education system exacerbates social inequalities".
