The Bürgerbühne at the Kleist Forum has made it to the pre-selection for the Berliner Festspiele's Theatertreffen der Jugend with its martial arts performance "Sekundenglück". 95 ensembles from all over Germany submitted their productions for the youth theater competition. In the first round, the jury has chosen 15 productions and ensembles from nine federal states for the interim selection and will view them live in the coming weeks. The plays that will be invited to the 45th edition of the festival in Berlin will be announced on March 26. The Theatertreffen der Jugend will take place from June 1 to 8.
"Sekundenglück" premiered on February 14 on the studio stage of Frankfurt's Kleist Forum. In this emotional martial arts performance, five young wrestlers reflect on their biographies as top athletes. They talk about moments of success and defeats, the mindless monotony of everyday training, the fear of not being enough and the pressure not to lose their willpower despite everything. For the project, director Hannes Langer and his team are working closely with the Frankfurt Sports School and the Hansa 90 wrestling club.
"To be shortlisted from so many applications is a great honor and confirmation of the work that the Bürgerbühne team is doing. It's not just about making theater, but about encounters, exchanges and engaging with people and issues of our city and our time. 'Sekundenglück' is an impressive example of this," says Florian Vogel, Artistic Director of the Kleist Forum.
Founded in 1979, the national youth theater competition Theatertreffen der Jugend sees itself as a platform and place of inspiration and exchange where young theater professionals can negotiate their working methods and their different themes and positions and be encouraged in their individual, artistic forms of expression.
