The folk and world music duo Tante Friedl

On February 23 and 24, 2024, it's time for Folk'n'Walde at the Parkclub Fürstenwalde!

Two concerts and a session await you at the opening of the fourth edition of the festival. The award-winning duo Tante Friedl will kick things off at 19:30 with folk music from many corners of the world. Afterwards, singer-songwriter and folk musician Peggy Luck will perform her own and traditional songs.

The second day of the festival, on 24.02.2024, will also be filled with the most beautiful folk music. Then the focus will be on dancing. In the afternoon, there will be a workshop to get a taste of the world of folk dance and bal folk. The first steps are danced to live music and the fear of "doing it wrong" is taken away. The skills learned can be put to the test in the evening at the concerts by Mara Menzel and the Gerstenberg family. The music is not just made for dancers. Guests who prefer listening to dancing will also get their money's worth. After the official part, it is possible to become an active part of the festival with a folk session. Make music together, freely and informally. A song on your lips, accompanied by a cool drink. It's that simple. All you need to bring is your voice and/or instruments. Our festival can't do without money, so we are delighted that the Oder Spree district and the town of Fürstenwalde are generously supporting us. Thank you very much for that.

When and where?

Venue: Parkclub Fürstenwalde, Dr.-W.-Külz-Straße 10A, 15517 Fürstenwalde

Program schedule

Friday, 23.02.24

7:30 p.m. | Tante Friedel – Folk & World Music
Tante Friedl is a folk and world music duo based in Berlin that you will fall in love with. With accordion, banjo and their powerful voices, Magdalena Kriss from Bavaria and Dan Wall from New York State create their own songs as well as new, gripping interpretations of folk and roots music from Central Europe, the Balkans and America. Their diverse repertoire, from trade union and protest songs to songs about love, loss, nature and adventure, provides insights into other cultures, stories and perspectives. Since 2020, they have been on the road during the summer months on the "Tandem Music Tour", where they cycle from concert to concert on their tandem. In summer 2021, they released their debut album "Tandem", which was nominated in two categories for the German Record Critics' Award. In January 2023, they won the FREIBURGER LEITER, the prize of the Freiburger Kulturbörse! | www.tantefriedl.eu

9:00 p.m. | Peggy Luck – Lied & Folk
Peggy Luck's songs invite you to the edge of things. Timeless intermediate worlds and endless breakfast tables unfold between art song and folk - the harmonies know how to surprise, but never remain unfamiliar. Finely woven guitar tones accompany a warm, powerful voice. "(...) Songwriter is not quite the right word, because Peggy Luck not only writes and sings songs, but also composes little literary gems. Her versatile and subtle lyrics reflect something of the fears and darkness of this world and reveal its fractures, they encourage reflection and, not least, getting to know oneself." (Dr. Björn Reich) | www.peggyluck.de

approx. 10:30 p.m. | Folk session (free admission)
Every evening after the last concert there is time and space to play or sing yourself. So don't forget your voices and instruments.

Saturday, 24.02.24

3:00 to 5:30 p.m. | Workshop: Folk dance for beginners with live music
Workshop for everyone who would like to try out Bal Folk, remember it or simply dance. Here you can learn that European folk dance has nothing to do with swaying and Musikantenstadl. You can learn dances to dream and celebrate with us in no time at all and try out what you have learned with live music. You don't need a regular dance partner. But if you bring your friends along, everything will be extra fun. The dances will be explained by Marcus Fabian. There will also be live music from the Gerstenberg family.

Mara Menzel

7:30 p.m. | Mara Menzel – Bal Folk
An accordion, a voice and self-written melodies – Mara Menzel has been playing with bands such as "Stimmt so.", "Searching the Roots", "Lunesk" and "Knopfgemurmel" since she was given a diatonic accordion for her 18th birthday – first on stages in Germany and then in Europe. Over time, many melodies have become balfolk songs, so that she has now also been performing with her solo set for several years. Her songs contain stories, joie de vivre and a lot of emotion. Coming from a dance background herself, she combines her fun with her experience as a musician and dancer. You can look forward to multilingual singing, lots of fun, glittering mazurkas and glowing dances at her solo concert.

9:00 p.m. | Gerstenberg family - Bal Folk
The Gerstenberg family plays traditional and original music for your dancing pleasure. Waltz, schottisch, bourrée or mazurka, sometimes played powerfully as a band, sometimes soloistically and delicately. Variety is the top priority for this cheerful family. With whistles, bellows and strings, they weave a tapestry of sound on which you can dance with relish. www.familie-gerstenberg.com

approx. 10:30 p.m. | Folk session (admission free)
Every evening after the last concert there is time and space to play or sing yourself. So don't forget your voices and instruments.
