It is about war, morality and civil disobedience, the good of all and the sacrifice of individuals - the new production of "Antigone", which premiered at the Hans Otto Theater in Potsdam at the end of October, shows just how topical the subject matter of a classic Greek tragedy can still be today. On November 11, the play can be seen at the Kleist Forum in Frankfurt.

In his adaptation of the ancient story, Potsdam-based author John von Düffel not only tells the story of Antigone, who wants to bury her brother who died in battle despite a ban from the highest authorities, but also the immediate history of her family. The quarrel between Oedipus' sons, Eteocles and Polyneikes, is shown as well as Creon's sacrifice and rise to power. The production by Potsdam director Bettina Jahnke shows people who are forced to make decisions in the face of an existential situation and under extreme time pressure. The consequences are always extreme - whether for their personal lives or for the good of all. A highly topical story develops from a six-person choir, which makes it possible to experience how an open, democratic society is transformed into an autocracy in no time at all.
