Slight spring revival on the labor market –
Unemployment below 14 thousand again in East Brandenburg

In the city of Frankfurt (Oder), the district of Märkisch-Oderland and the district of Oder-Spree, a total of 13,976 people were registered as unemployed in April. That is 267 fewer than in March and 334 more than in April a year ago.
The unemployment rate fell slightly to 6.2 percent, down from 6.3 percent in March. In April last year, it stood at 6.1 percent.

In April, 12 companies reported new short-time work. In March there were 9 companies. As companies have up to three months to report short-time work, the total figures for all companies on short-time work and the employees affected are available with a delay. According to projections, 32 companies in East Brandenburg and 480 employees were on short-time work in December 2023.

Jochem Freyer, Chairman of the Management Board of the Frankfurt (Oder) Employment Agency: "The economy is stuttering – the labor market remains robust. April brought a slight spring revival. Despite the economic slump, we have registered over 2,000 vacancies. This shows that the labor shortage is a brake on growth. We are therefore working intensively on training and activating the unemployed and integrating migrants. More qualified immigration and incentives to extend working hours would help the economy noticeably."

Marco Schulz, Managing Director of the Märkisch-Oderland Job Center: "In May, the focus will once again be on training placement for everyone involved. In our Märkisch-Oderland Youth Employment Agency, the careers advice service at the employment agency and our staff at the job center are also helping young people to find an apprenticeship in the last few weeks before they finish school. There are interesting offers in almost every sector that match young people's career aspirations. On the website Elternpower-Brandenburg, interested young people can find additional information on regional action days, trade fairs, advice services and workshops on career orientation. Take advantage of the opportunities and get in touch with us – our youth employment agency can help!"

Frank Mahlkow, Managing Director of the Jobcenter Frankfurt (Oder): "More and more people who have fled from Ukraine want to stay in Germany permanently and gain a professional foothold here. Many of the refugees have already completed an integration course and can now start work. However, starting a career is not always easy. The desire to work in the profession they have learned here in Germany is understandable, but not always immediately feasible. Refugees have a good chance of entering the job market and shaping their own professional future – even with basic German language skills. Language skills can then be further improved on the job. And this opens up new prospects for advancing in their career or finding a new job in the future. The Jobcenter and the Employment Agency support citizens, for example with the "Job-Turbo 2.0" campaign days. From 27.05.2024 to 29.05.2024, you have the opportunity to get to know various companies and their entry-level, internship and qualification opportunities in one compact hour online at https://www.arbeitsagentur.de/k/job-turbo-aktionstage."
